The right cold room panel thickness depends on the storage temperature and the product. As a general guide:

• Fruit & vegetables, +7°C to +1°C: 60–80 mm
• Meat & cheese, −2°C to +2°C: 80–100 mm
• Frozen products, −18°C to −25°C: 100–120 mm
• Ice, −10°C: 100 mm
• Ice cream, −30°C: 120–140 mm
• Blast-freezing tunnel / deep freezing, −30°C to −40°C: 120 / 140 / 160 mm

Thicker polyurethane panels give better insulation and lower running costs. If your product is not on this list, contact AMP and we will advise on the correct specification.

It depends on the temperature your products need:

• Walk-in chiller (cold room): usually +2°C to +8°C, for fresh produce, dairy, meat and other perishables — often with humidity control to keep optimal conditions.
• Walk-in freezer: usually below −18°C, for frozen meat, seafood and ready meals that must stay deep-frozen and safe.
• Blast-freezing tunnel (deep freezing): −30°C to −40°C, to rapidly chill products from room or process temperature down to very low temperatures for long-term preservation.

Most cold rooms used by pedestrians and trolleys with Teflon or plastic wheels are supplied by AMP with an insulated polyurethane floor panel. If forklifts will drive into the room, the cold room is usually taller than 2.80 m; in that case we recommend floor insulation with rigid boards (e.g. Fibran/Dow type) plus an industrial floor that can withstand heavier loads.

Automated factory production lets us build the cold room to your exact required dimensions. AMP provides a floor plan so you can check the measurements before production. Because the polyurethane panels can wrap around a corner or column, or follow a non-rectangular shape (for example trapezoidal), you can make full use of the available space.

For heavy-duty cold storage and freezer doors with forklift traffic, we use a heavy-duty anodised aluminium frame with a triple thermal break (with the option of an easily replaceable 30 W/m heating element). An aluminium frame is also used in areas that can reach high temperatures. PVC frames are suitable for standard cold storage and freezer doors.

PU (polyurethane) panel doors give extra thermal and sound insulation for spaces with a temperature difference — for example a bread production line with shock/tunnel deep freezing, where the product will be sold frozen. Polyethylene flip-flap doors suit fast, frequent passage where full insulation is not the main priority. 

On freezer (negative-temperature) sliding doors the floor threshold can ice up and block the door, so we use an oil-filled hollow section fitted with a heating resistance: it prevents ice forming at the threshold and keeps the door sliding freely. In chiller / positive-temperature rooms, where there is no freezing risk at floor level, a simple metal floor angle is sufficient.

When the door has a stainless-steel bottom sill (threshold), a brush seal is not used; the perimeter gasket seals the door instead. The choice depends on the type of bottom sill fitted. 

AMP’s controlled-atmosphere doors were developed with the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), together with AMP’s R&D department. They are used where the space must stay airtight — for example fruit-packing facilities where produce is preserved long-term using ozone or ammonia inside the cold rooms.

A motorised door has several safety features for fully safe passage of pedestrians, pallet trucks and forklifts:

• A sensitive safety edge along the edge of the door that detects an obstacle.
• A light curtain with multiple photocells that sees any passing pedestrian or pallet truck.
• A single photocell, protected in a stainless-steel housing.

A refrigerated fire-rated door (with thermal and sound insulation) is a higher-specification door: it has lower thermal transmittance (U-value) and offers greater safety. It is used in cold rooms when the fire service requires fire compartments in the cold-room area, by companies that want higher specifications, and by oil companies (for installation in fire-rated vaults).

AMP cold rooms meet the hygiene requirements set by HACCP for food storage. They include hygienic profiles that prevent the build-up of bacteria and micro-organisms: PVC hygienic corners with silicone edges that fit tightly and seal every gap, fitted around the ceiling perimeter and the internal corners of the room. A hygienic skirting runs around the floor perimeter so the room is easy to clean.

Yes. Hygienic corners support proper hygiene and cleaning of the cold room. The hygienic-profile package includes hygienic corners for the ceiling perimeter and the vertical corners, plus a hygienic skirting for the wall-to-floor joint. 

Hygienic profiles are essential for keeping a clean, safe environment for storing perishable products such as food and pharmaceuticals. With high-quality hygienic profiles, businesses can protect product quality and safety, comply with EFET (the Greek food safety authority) and HACCP, and reduce the risk of contamination and spoilage.

They help in two main ways: preventing microbial growth, which can develop in the humid conditions of a cold room, and preventing cross-contamination between products. Best practice includes regular cleaning and disinfection, monitoring temperature, humidity and microbial levels, and training staff in hygiene procedures.

The panels come with their Kunststoff profile clips and the connectors that join the perimeter panels to the ceiling and floor. The room is supplied with the hygienic profiles that keep the joints clean (hygienic corner plus hygienic skirting). The package includes the cold room door with its frame, the floor (where specified), screws, polyurethane foam and silicone sealant.

Cold storage doors are specially insulated doors that ensure an airtight seal and a stable temperature in chilled and frozen areas. They feature a high-density polyurethane core, perimeter sealing gaskets and a durable surface, minimising cold loss and energy consumption. AMP's cold storage doors are made from German-sourced INOX 304 stainless steel, galvanised or painted steel, with a heavy-duty PVC internal reinforcement and a polyurethane core for excellent insulation. The stainless surface does not harbour bacteria, fungi or mould, is easy to clean and resists corrosion, chemicals and impact.  

A chiller door is used at temperatures above zero (typically 0 °C to +5 °C), while a freezer door operates down to -25 °C. Freezer doors have a greater insulation thickness and a built-in heating element in the frame, to prevent ice build-up and the gasket freezing to the frame.

At the very low temperatures of freezing, moisture freezes and can stick the sealing gasket to the frame or form ice around the door. The perimeter heating element keeps the frame slightly warm, ensuring smooth opening and closing, a proper seal and a longer service life for the freezer door. 

Chiller doors typically cover the range 0 °C to +5 °C and freezer doors the range -18 °C to -25 °C. For special applications, such as low-temperature or blast-freezing rooms, AMP manufactures doors for even lower temperatures, made to order.

A walk-in chiller is a walk-in refrigerated room that keeps fresh products at a temperature above zero. It is used for fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, pharmaceuticals and beverages. It is built from polyurethane insulated panels (sandwich panels), a refrigeration unit and a cold storage door, to maintain a stable temperature and humidity. 

A walk-in chiller usually operates between 0 °C and +8 °C, depending on the product stored. For example, fresh meat and dairy require around 0 °C to +4 °C, while fruit, vegetables or beverages can be kept at slightly higher temperatures.

A walk-in freezer is a walk-in deep-freeze room for the long-term storage of frozen products. It has an increased insulation thickness, an insulated floor and a freezer door with a heating element, to maintain consistently very low temperatures and minimise energy losses.

A walk-in freezer usually operates between -18 °C and -25 °C. For special needs, such as blast freezing or storing fish and ice cream, AMP manufactures rooms that reach lower, down to -40 °C.

The main difference is the operating temperature: a walk-in chiller keeps products fresh above zero, while a walk-in freezer keeps them frozen below zero. A walk-in freezer requires thicker panels, an insulated floor, a more powerful refrigeration unit and a door with a heating element.

A cold room consists of polyurethane insulated panels (walls, ceiling and, in freezers, the floor), a cold storage door, a refrigeration unit (compressor and coils), as well as accessories such as PVC strip curtains, lighting and thermometers. AMP provides complete turnkey solutions.

Chillers typically use panels 60–100 mm thick, while freezers require panels 120–200 mm thick for adequate thermal insulation. The exact thickness depends on the operating temperature, the dimensions of the space and the climatic conditions.
