Choosing your cold room

What panel thickness should I choose for a walk-in chiller or walk-in freezer?

The right cold room panel thickness depends on the storage temperature and the product. As a general guide:

  • Fruit & vegetables, +7°C to +1°C: 60–80 mm
  • Meat & cheese, −2°C to +2°C: 80–100 mm
  • Frozen products, −18°C to −25°C: 100–120 mm
  • Ice, −10°C: 100 mm
  • Ice cream, −30°C: 120–140 mm
  • Blast-freezing tunnel / deep freezing, −30°C to −40°C: 120 / 140 / 160 mm

Thicker polyurethane panels give better insulation and lower running costs. If your product is not on this list, contact AMP and we will advise on the correct specification.

Cold storage & freezer doors

When do you use a PVC door frame and when an aluminium frame?

For heavy-duty cold storage and freezer doors with forklift traffic, we use a heavy-duty anodised aluminium frame with a triple thermal break (with the option of an easily replaceable 30 W/m heating element). An aluminium frame is also used in areas that can reach high temperatures. PVC frames are suitable for standard cold storage and freezer doors.

Hygiene & food safety

What hygiene standards does an AMP cold room meet?

AMP cold rooms meet the hygiene requirements set by HACCP for food storage. They include hygienic profiles that prevent the build-up of bacteria and micro-organisms: PVC hygienic corners with silicone edges that fit tightly and seal every gap, fitted around the ceiling perimeter and the internal corners of the room. A hygienic skirting runs around the floor perimeter so the room is easy to clean.

What is included in an AMP cold room package?

The panels come with their Kunststoff profile clips and the connectors that join the perimeter panels to the ceiling and floor. The room is supplied with the hygienic profiles that keep the joints clean (hygienic corner plus hygienic skirting). The package includes the cold room door with its frame, the floor (where specified), screws, polyurethane foam and silicone sealant.
